NAFSMA and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support "implementation of low impact design (LID) and green infrastructure (GI) through joint education and outreach." The voluntary 5-year agreement was signed by NAFSMA President Dusty Williams on February 5, 2014.
As part of the agreement, NAFSMA members' expertise will be tapped to help the agency communicate how LID and GI can be used as a solution in managing urban floodwaters and stormwater, and improving resiliency and water quality.
NAFSMA members can benefit from the agreement by sharing their projects and insight for the creation, and advancement, of successful approaches and best practices. As part of this effort, NAFSMA agreed to brief the Urban Water Federal Partners on urban water resiliency, hold webinars and support LID and GI competitions, where appropriate.
In addition, NAFSMA will add GI programming to its annual meeting and will create a "Green Infrastructure Stormwater Award" as part of its 2014 Education and Outreach Awards.
